Assemblymember Diane Dixon of Newport Beach has introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 66, marking May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month. The resolution was presented on the Assembly Floor in Sacramento on May 27, 2025.

Dixon stated, “I was proud to present ACR 66 to honor May as Skin Cancer Awareness month,” highlighting skin cancer as the most common form of cancer in the United States and emphasizing the need for awareness about prevention methods.

Skin cancer impacts millions across the country each year. According to estimates from the American Cancer Society, over 8,000 Americans are expected to die from skin cancer this year. These figures emphasize the necessity of spreading awareness about its prevalence, risk factors, and preventive actions.

“This issue is deeply personal to me,” Dixon shared. She recently underwent several treatments for skin cancer but credited early detection and quality medical care for her recovery while remaining vigilant about her health.

As a member of the Rare Disease Caucus, Dixon prioritizes raising awareness on health issues affecting Californians. She noted that her district attracts approximately 50 million visitors annually who enjoy Orange County’s beaches and coastline. “It is crucial we raise awareness about the risks of ultraviolet exposure and enjoy our beautiful weather responsibly,” she added.

Dixon represents California’s 72nd Assembly District which includes Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Woods, and Lake Forest.
