Roxane Cohen Silver, a distinguished psychologist from the University of California, Irvine, has been elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Her groundbreaking studies on stress and coping in the face of traumatic incidents have garnered international recognition. Hal Stern, UCI provost and executive vice chancellor, congratulated Silver on her accomplishments, stating, "Her outstanding scholarship on the effects of stress has had a significant impact throughout the world and exemplifies the exceptional research being done at UC Irvine."
Silver, a Distinguished Professor of psychological science, medicine, and public health, has dedicated over four decades to studying the psychological and physical reactions to stressful life experiences. Her research, funded by prestigious institutions, has provided valuable insights into personal traumas and collective events such as mass violence, pandemics, and natural disasters globally.
Expressing her gratitude for the honor, Silver said, "I am honored to have been elected a fellow by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences." She acknowledged the support she has received from her colleagues and the UC Irvine community throughout her career. With her election, Silver joins a prestigious group of scholars from UC Irvine as Academy members.
The American Academy of Arts & Sciences, established in 1780, brings together exceptional individuals from various sectors to address challenges at a national and global level. The induction ceremonies for the new members, including Silver, will take place in September 2024 in Cambridge, Mass.
