The University of California, Irvine has been recognized as a Fulbright HSI Leader for the year 2024 by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This distinction is awarded to Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) that show strong engagement with the Fulbright Program, which is a significant international academic exchange initiative run by the U.S. government.
UC Irvine stands among 51 HSIs receiving this recognition in 2024. The university's commitment to supporting Fulbright participants and promoting program opportunities on campus was highlighted as exemplary. "As a university that pursues the intentional agenda of being open, inclusive and committed to academic excellence and global impact, we are deeply proud of this recognition," said Chancellor Howard Gillman.
Since becoming a Hispanic-serving institution in 2017, UC Irvine has actively engaged with initiatives supporting Hispanic students and scholars. It is also a founding member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, which represents over 500 educational institutions across various regions.
Scott Weinhold from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs acknowledged the role HSIs play in enriching the Fulbright Program. “Fulbrighters from HSIs contribute to the program’s goal of reflecting the full diversity, perspectives and talents of the American people,” he stated.
The Fulbright Program aims to foster diversity within its ranks and partners with various organizations including historically black colleges and universities and others focused on community colleges, disability exchanges, and diversity abroad initiatives.
Victoria Jones, UC Irvine’s chief global affairs officer, emphasized the importance of connections made through Fulbright: “Our students and scholars do not travel alone; they join a Fulbright family that offers invaluable partners and future lifelong friends.”
UC Irvine continues to push forward its Brilliant Future campaign aimed at increasing support for its programs through philanthropic efforts. Established in 1965, UC Irvine is part of the prestigious Association of American Universities.
