There were 19 companies in cities associated with Orange County that received 19 FDA inspections in the first quarter of 2024, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Association.
The University of California, Irvine has received a $50 million donation from Orange County biotech entrepreneur Charlie Dunlop for the School of Biological Sciences. Dean Frank LaFerla announced the gift before thousands of graduating students, faculty, and family supporters at today’s school commencement, where Dunlop was the featured speaker.
More than 8,200 students and their families will attend University of California, Irvine commencement ceremonies between Friday, June 14, and Monday, June 17, at the campus’s Bren Events Center. Overall, UC Irvine will grant 11,034 degrees this academic year – 9,336 undergraduate, 1,146 master’s and 552 doctoral degrees. Notably, 49 percent of those receiving bachelor’s degrees are first-generation college students.
In April, the median sale price of a home in Orange County rose by $204,500 from the same period in the previous year, while total sales increased by 20.9%.
Ten assistant professors at the University of California, Irvine will receive Hellman Fellowships for the 2024-25 academic year. These fellowships are awarded annually to support research by junior faculty members. Since its establishment at UC Irvine in 2013, the Hellman Fellows Fund has recognized 85 scholars.

The festival, hosted by the Laguna Ocean Foundation, honors Laguna Beach’s coastal shoreline and kelp resources.
