ORANGE COUNTY, CA – On April 17, Representative Lou Correa (D-CA) joined Chapman University President Daniele Struppa to announce $2,200,000 in federal funding for Chapman University’s Earth Systems Science Data Solutions Lab.

This funding is part of the nearly $30 million that Rep. Correa secured for community projects throughout California’s 46th congressional district in the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) omnibus appropriations bill, which President Biden signed into law last year. Rep. Correa worked in lockstep with community leaders to identify priorities for CA-46 constituents, and fought for them during the annual funding process.

“Droughts and climate change are having a significant influence on agricultural production in California, and every Californian is feeling the effects,” said Rep. Correa. “That’s why I’m proud to support Chapman University’s establishment of scientific and mapping capabilities that have the potential to become a geoscientific classification system that is universally applicable in response to these crucial concerns—and will impact the lives of thousands who call Orange County home. Their work is nothing short of groundbreaking, and I’m honored to have delivered additional federal funding to this vitally important project in our district.”

Since its formation, the Earth Systems Science Data Solutions Lab at Chapman has tracked global progress on the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, established in 2003. The goals target clean energy, air pollution, poverty, hunger, human health and a dozen other sustainability initiatives established by the UN.

"The work being done in our Earth Systems Science Data Solutions Lab is not abstract, it provides policymakers with the data to make decisions that affect us all," said Chapman University President Daniele C. Struppa. "This is work and cutting-edge technology that has an impact on how we predict, prepare for and respond to drought in our region and globally."
