WASHINGTON, D.C. — On April 19, Representatives Lou Correa (CA-46), Ranking Member of the House Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), and Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calling for DHS to ensure that that it is fully prepared for the termination of Title 42 on May 11th, 2023, and that it has the resources available to ensure the humane treatment of migrants in its wake.

“While we applaud the Biden Administration for terminating this Trump-era policy that wrongly prevented people from seeking assistance at our ports of entry, we recognize that end of this thinly veiled border control policy may lead to a temporary influx of asylum-seekers,” the members wrote. “We want to work with you to ensure the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is prepared to expeditiously and humanely process and care for these individuals after Title 42 is terminated.”

Led by Ranking Member Correa, the top Democrat on the Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, the members urge DHS to continue working with Congress to ensure that it has the resources, tools, and support it needs to treat all migrants with dignity and respect.

“In particular, we hope Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is prepared to provide appropriate housing conditions to all migrants temporarily in their care, and expeditiously vet and process all those to be released pending their immigration hearings,” the members continued. “We also urge DHS to continue to build partnerships with local and non-governmental organizations that can assist migrants following their departure from Federal custody.”

This letter comes following Ranking Member Correa’s visit to two border points of entry in San Luis, AZ and the Calexico West port of entry in Calexico, CA this week, roughly one month before the Biden administration will end Title 42 expulsions.
