WASHINGTON, D.C. — On June 22, Representative Lou Correa (CA-46), Ranking Member of the Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, voted against an unserious, and purely political, Republican-led attempt to punish schools for providing support to undocumented students, H.Res.461, and issued the following statement:

“My colleagues on the other side of the aisle have for months claimed to want to reform our nation’s broken immigration system—but they do not. This messaging bill on the floor today proves that they are not at all serious in that endeavor,” Ranking Member Correa said. “If they were serious about making our immigration system more functional and efficient, they wouldn’t be punishing local schools for providing care to undocumented students or trying to pass punitive measures targeting them—they would be engaging with my Democratic colleagues and I to pass comprehensive immigration reform, to keep our nation’s economy afloat and keep families together.”

Specifically, the resolution disapproves of the use of school facilities to provide shelter for undocumented immigrants, including many undocumented students, who would be negatively impacted by such action—and by proxy, threatens their access to federal funding and support if they do so.
