Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA) today released the following statement on her vote against the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024:

“The House version of this year’s NDAA authorizes tens of billions more in spending than even our Department of Defense requested as necessary. When Congress continues to fund projects like a $750 million amphibious vessel that the Navy didn’t even request, defense contractors continue to get rich off our hard-earned taxpayer dollars.”

“Rather than write defense legislation to hold the Pentagon accountable for rampant waste and prioritize our troops’ well-being, Republicans pushed to include extreme measures that would prevent servicemembers from receiving abortion care and attack our military’s successful efforts at creating opportunities for all to serve.”

“I opposed this legislation because American taxpayers and our brave troops deserve thoughtful policymaking that improves our national security. Congress has a duty to evaluate every spending request, especially those with regard to national security where American lives are on the line. Wasteful spending to placate defense lobbyists leaves us weaker as a nation, not stronger.”

Earlier this week, Rep. Porter exposed widespread waste in the Department of Defense—the only federal agency to have never passed an audit—during a hearing on financial accountability at the Pentagon. Watch her use “JeoparDoD!” to win oversight for the American people HERE.
