Assemblymember Dixon marked the introduction of Newport Beach's new trash interceptor, highlighting a significant milestone in regional environmental efforts. Reflecting on her involvement, she stated, “Today is a great day,” noting her participation since the project's inception over a decade ago during her tenure on the Newport Beach City Council and as Chair of the Water Quality Committee.
In 2022, Dixon played a crucial role in securing funding through the State Budget process to bring this project to fruition. She emphasized the trash wheel's potential impact: “This trash wheel will greatly improve our regional efforts to prevent trash and debris from entering the ocean.”
The Assemblymember is committed to maintaining Orange County as an attractive coastal destination for millions of visitors annually. She is also spearheading initiatives for a similar interceptor at the northern boundary of the 72nd Assembly District along the San Gabriel River.
The newly installed Trash Interceptor, part of the Newport Bay Pollution Control Project, is strategically placed near San Diego Creek's outlet. It features a floating platform with a 14-foot steel water wheel powered by creek currents. This system includes guide piles designed to endure storm flows and varying water levels. The mechanism employs spring-loaded leaf rakes and conveyors to collect floating debris into containers, thereby preventing pollutants from reaching the Pacific Ocean and enhancing regional water quality.
Dixon highlighted tourism and marine life reliance on healthy oceans: “Our businesses rely on tourism, and marine life relies on a healthy ocean.” She described it as "a big achievement" that taxpayer dollars are being used effectively for community betterment. Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about the trash wheel’s impact: “I am looking forward to seeing how this trash wheel will make a difference for residents and visitors in my district, in addition to a healthier and cleaner environment for all generations to enjoy.”
