On April 3, 2025, researchers from the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine) released a study in the "Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin," examining how partisan views shaped the perception of the 2018 Senate hearings involving Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. The study aimed to understand differing perspectives of Democrats and Republicans during the hearings.

Through this research, the team analyzed open-ended responses from a national group of more than 2,300 U.S. adults gathered in the days after the hearings. The respondents reportedly experienced a hefty amount of media coverage—nearly eight hours per day. Despite similar exposure to media content, "they 'saw' a very different hearing," according to the study's authors, including Roxane Cohen Silver, Emma L. Grisham, Pasha Dashtgard, Daniel P. Relihan, and E. Alison Holman.

The research indicated a stark partisan divide in both perceptions and stress responses, underscoring the gravity of political polarization in the United States. The authors stressed the importance of understanding these divergent narratives to address political divisions and foster common ground on contentious issues.

Their work sheds light on how partisanship affects perception and emotional responses in political contexts, suggesting a need for further exploration in this field. The findings aim to improve efforts to reduce political polarization and address psychological issues that arise from politicized events. "Our results make clear the importance of understanding partisan differences in perception and their potential consequences for mental health and political discourse," Silver noted.

The study is part of UC Irvine's ongoing initiatives, including the Brilliant Future campaign, which started on October 4, 2019. The campaign seeks to mobilize alumni and secure a $2 billion investment to enhance various areas such as student success, health, and research at the university.
