Assemblymember Diane Dixon has introduced two bills aimed at enhancing wildfire recovery and prevention efforts in California. The proposed legislation, AB 623 and AB 624, forms a part of her wildfire bill package.

AB 624, known as the Community Relief Act, seeks to establish a grant program designed to provide financial assistance to local agencies, community-based organizations, and individuals for costs related to disasters. These organizations play a crucial role in relief efforts by offering shelter, evacuation updates, and necessary supplies to those affected by wildfires.

"Our local agencies and community organizations are on the front lines during disasters. We are fortunate and grateful to have their courage and determination during times of crisis," said Assemblymember Dixon. "The Community Relief Act is a way for us to support them when disaster strikes. It is imperative we provide the community the local control they need to get aid and support to affected individuals and businesses."

The second piece of legislation, AB 623, proposes exemptions for fuel reduction projects from the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as well as exemptions for fuel modification projects from both CEQA and the California Coastal Act. This bill aims to streamline procedures that currently pose challenges in implementing proactive measures against wildfires.

"Despite the overall good intentions of CEQA, we must take a common sense approach when it comes to tackling fires and fire prevention. It’s no secret CEQA compliance creates a complicated and onerous approval process. AB 623 is a crucial step in reducing unnecessary bureaucratic red tape when it comes to wildfire prevention and recovery," stated Assemblymember Dixon.

These legislative efforts come in response to data from CAL Fire indicating that many of California's largest, deadliest, and most destructive wildfires have occurred since 2015.
